Rediscovering Analog in the 21st Century: Best E-Readers

With Apple’s iPhone series and Samsung’s Galaxy line, digital devices are flaunting their dazzling specs daily, screaming for consumer attention: “Look at me! I’ve got so many features, a stunning display, and booming sound quality!” Like many others, I’m a fan of gadgets—I’ve been using an iPhone for over a decade and proudly consider myself a tech enthusiast.

However, there’s an undeniable shift happening—retro is making a comeback, and people seem eager to revisit the past. Living in Korea, I’m not entirely sure about global reading trends, but here in Korea, reading has become a trendy, almost hip activity. And with Han Kang’s Nobel Prize win, reading has gained even more traction. (Her achievement was an incredible honor, as she became the first Asian woman from South Korea to receive the award. Congratulations to her!)

In a country like South Korea, where efficiency and convenience are highly valued, many still buy physical books, but just as many are turning to digital devices for reading. Given the small living spaces and lack of room to store piles of books, alongside the fast-paced lifestyle where people read on the subway or during short breaks, e-readers have become essential. As unfortunate as it may be, this is the reality for many in Korea. I wonder if people abroad are also embracing e-books as much? In hopes of helping someone out, I’ve selected a few e-readers to introduce.

The Rise of E-Ink Tablets

The Rise of E-Ink Tablets

If you browse YouTube, magazines, or blogs, it’s clear that interest in e-readers is on the rise. Devices like e-ink tablets and e-book readers are garnering significant attention. As reading becomes more valued, many still choose to purchase or borrow physical books, but for those who prioritize efficiency, practicality, and convenience, e-readers are becoming the go-to choice.

But what is it about e-ink tablets that draws people in, especially when they could just as easily buy an iPad or another tablet?

Why do people specifically opt for e-ink devices?

Features and Pros & Cons of E-Book Readers

The standout feature of e-paper is its display, which closely mimics the characteristics of traditional printed paper. Unlike LCD or OLED screens, e-paper operates entirely differently.

First off, e-paper displays in black and white, with a refresh rate of 0 Hz. When compared to actual paper, the difference is hardly noticeable. These devices only consume power when refreshing the display, so while text or images are shown, no additional energy is used, making them incredibly energy-efficient. Another appealing point is their excellent readability in sunlight. Since the display resembles printed paper, even in bright outdoor conditions, it remains as legible as a physical book. Additionally, e-readers are lightweight and thin, making them easy to carry. Their lifespan is also impressive—almost semi-permanent compared to backlit or organic displays, often lasting around five years without issue.

Now that we’ve covered the positives, let’s talk about the drawbacks. While e-readers offer plenty of benefits, they do have some clear downsides, so it’s important to weigh your options carefully.

Though some e-ink displays are now available in color, they generally remain black and white, which sets them apart from regular tablets. This limitation might make some people hesitate, especially considering that e-readers aren’t particularly cheap. Another significant drawback is the slow response time. Watching videos or playing games is out of the question, and even web browsing can be frustratingly slow. In reality, e-readers are designed almost exclusively for reading, and that’s where their functionality ends. Moreover, the durability of e-ink panels is on the weaker side, so careful handling is necessary. A protective case, especially one that covers the screen, is a must. It’s common to see users carrying their devices in thick, cushioned cases to ensure they’re safe from damage. Essentially, after buying the device, purchasing a case is almost mandatory.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a device focused solely on reading, light note-taking, and minimal distractions, an e-reader can be the perfect companion for you. However, if you’re after versatility, you might want to look elsewhere.

In Conclusion

In addition to the products mentioned, there are countless other e-ink devices being introduced to the market. Many companies around the world are releasing tablets focused solely on reading, which is a positive trend. In a time when the future is progressing rapidly, it’s intriguing to see analog experiences being perceived as trendy and aesthetically appealing.

One more interesting piece of information is that, while Korea does have companies that produce e-book readers, large bookstores and e-book platforms such as Millie’s Library and Yes24 are also developing and selling their own e-readers. This trend further highlights the growing popularity of reading in digital formats, even within local markets.

Reading Habits in Korea

According to 2023 statistics, the average Korean reads about 4 books a year—a somewhat embarrassing figure. Even more concerning is that 6 out of 10 adults do not read a single book all year. This reflects a serious issue. Globally, there are increasing reports and videos discussing the declining literacy rates of the younger generation, especially the MZ (Millennial and Gen Z) generation. While the rise of smartphones has made it easier to access vast amounts of information, this shift toward a visual and video-focused culture has distanced many from the written word.

As someone living in Korea, I can offer a small excuse—there’s simply no time to read. Korea is an incredibly fast-paced and busy country. Now that I work as a freelancer, with a writing-based career, I have the luxury of setting aside time for reading. But when I was working a regular job, I barely had the time to go out and buy books. I resorted to reading through e-book apps on my commute, but on particularly exhausting days, even that felt impossible.

As the importance of reading, literature, and writing is increasingly emphasized, I hope that more people can reconnect with books. A silver lining is that in Korea, people in their 20s have the highest overall reading rate, which is certainly encouraging news.

Dear Visitors,

When do you find time to read? I’m curious to know how you fit reading into your busy daily life.
If you have any great book recommendations, I’d love for you to share them with us! (It would be great if there’s a Korean translation available, but we can always read it in the original language!)

As we move deeper into the digital age, it’s fascinating to see the appeal of analog experiences, especially in areas like reading. E-readers strike a balance between modern technology and the nostalgic charm of physical books, offering practical benefits for those with busy lifestyles. While they aren’t perfect, e-readers have become indispensable for readers who value convenience, portability, and efficiency.

Whether you’re a devoted reader or someone just starting to rediscover the joy of reading, finding the right e-reader can enhance your experience. Hopefully, this guide helps you navigate the options and choose a device that suits your needs.

Happy reading!

Thank you!
